A Student Guide

A business plan competition is a contest where student teams pitch a startup idea to judges such as founders, investors and faculty. Teams submit a plan or pitch deck, defend it in a live Q&A, and compete for prize money, mentorship and investor access.

For students, the challenge is turning an idea into a case you can defend: who needs it, why they would pay, what it costs to deliver, and how you would reach customers.

You do not need every answer at the start. You do need to distinguish what you know from what you still need to test.

How Does a Business Plan Competition Work?

The organizer sets the eligibility rules, submission requirements, judging criteria, and deadlines. A competition may follow this sequence, although stages vary:

Application: Submit team details and a summary of the problem, customer, and proposed solution.

Shortlisting: Reviewers assess entries against the event’s criteria.

Development: Selected teams refine their research, business model, and pitch. Some events provide mentoring.

Presentation: Teams pitch their venture and answer questions.

Results: Selected entries receive awards or other support, subject to the prize terms.

Do not assume that “business plan competition” always means submitting a lengthy document. Follow the specified format. Feedback, mentoring, and access to investors also vary by event.

What Do Judges Look For?

Use the published rubric to guide your preparation. The following questions offer a useful starting point, rather than a universal scoring system.

Customer problem: Who experiences this problem, and how do they handle it today? Prepare interview notes, observations, and information about existing alternatives.

Market opportunity: How many reachable customers might buy? Prepare a bottom-up estimate with sources and assumptions.

Business model: Who pays, how much, and how often? Explain your pricing logic and revenue model.

Financial viability: Can revenue cover the costs? Include costs, contribution per sale, and a break-even calculation.

Execution: What can the team realistically deliver? Outline responsibilities, milestones, and operational constraints.

Presentation: Can the team explain and defend its choices? Prepare a focused pitch and direct answers to likely questions.

The event’s purpose matters. For example, FIIB’s Meraki 2027 jury scores entries on problem-idea fit, market and competitive understanding, value proposition, business and financial viability, and impact and responsibility. That makes its requirements different from an introductory classroom exercise. Always read the organizer’s own criteria before building your entry.

A Business Plan Example: Campus Laundry Pickup

This is a hypothetical teaching example. The figures are assumptions, not results from an actual student venture or FIIB team.

Imagine a team proposing a laundry-pickup service for hostel residents. Its initial claim is: “Every student needs laundry, so every resident is a potential subscriber.”

That leaves important questions unanswered. Which residents already use a convenient service? Who would pay extra for pickup? How often would they order?

The team could begin with one hostel, interview residents about their current routines, and test demand through a small paid pilot where permitted. Interviews can reveal problems; actual orders provide stronger evidence of willingness to pay.

Illustrative Monthly Financial Model

Price per order: ₹120

Variable cost per order: ₹80

Contribution per order: ₹40

Fixed operating costs: ₹8,000

Orders needed to break even: 200

Break-even orders = fixed costs ÷ contribution per order. Here, ₹8,000 ÷ ₹40 gives 200 orders per month.

At 150 orders, the model produces a ₹2,000 operating loss. At 250 orders, it produces a ₹2,000 operating surplus, before any costs excluded from these assumptions.

Now the team has a useful question: can this hostel generate more than 200 monthly orders at that price, within the team’s delivery capacity?

The calculation does not prove the business will succeed. It reveals what must be tested. A complete model would also examine startup spending, cash flow, and all relevant costs.

Business Plan Competition vs. Case Competition

A business plan competition centers on a proposed venture. A case competition generally centers on analyzing a supplied business situation and recommending action.

Starting point: A business plan competition begins with a venture idea or existing startup, while a case competition begins with a supplied business problem or case.

Main task: Business plan participants explain how their venture can work; case competition participants diagnose a situation and recommend action.

Evidence: Business plans use customer research, market data, and business assumptions. Case competitions use case information and any permitted research.

Output: Business plan competitions may require a plan, summary, financial model, or pitch. Case competitions require analysis and recommendations in the specified format.

Useful practice: Business plan competitions develop customer discovery and venture planning, while case competitions develop structured analysis and decision-making.

Both can involve financial analysis, teamwork, and presentations. Duration depends on the event, so compare deadlines and workload rather than assuming one format is always shorter.

What You Gain Beyond the Prize

The prize is only part of the return. A good competition also gives you feedback, mentorship, a network, and skills you can use after the event.

Feedback: Judges and mentors test your assumptions before a real investor or customer does. Meraki 2027, FIIB’s business pitch competition, runs three rounds of evaluation, so teams receive repeated expert input rather than a single verdict.

Mentorship: Meraki 2027 offers mentorship hours, incubation seats, and media features to its 20 finalists, plus a live pre-pitch webinar for each track.

Network: Teams meet mentors, investors, industry leaders, and peers from 130+ institutions, and past Meraki juries have included venture investors and founders.

Skills: You practice customer research, financial modeling, and defending a decision under questioning, which carry into placement interviews and later ventures.

Is Entering Worth Your Time?

A competition is worth considering when its requirements match your stage, interests, and available time.

It can give you a reason to investigate a customer problem, build a financial model, and defend decisions under questioning. You may also meet mentors or peers, although introductions and ongoing support are not guaranteed.

The work can supply examples for placement interviews or MBA and PGDM applications. Keep a record of your contribution: research you conducted, assumptions you revised, decisions you influenced, and results you can substantiate. Participation alone does not guarantee admission, employment, or funding.

Consider postponing an entry if the deadline leaves no room for meaningful research, the costs are disproportionate to your goals, or the event requires a more developed venture than you have.

Learning that an idea needs substantial revision can still make the exercise worthwhile.

How to Prepare Your First Entry

1. Check the Rules Before Building

Confirm student eligibility, team size, venture stage, attendance requirements, fees, deadlines, and submission formats. Read the organizer’s terms on confidentiality, idea ownership, publicity, and prize conditions. Ask for clarification where anything is unclear.

2. Define One Customer and Problem

Replace “a service for students” with a specific group and situation. For the laundry example, that might be residents of one hostel who struggle to use existing laundry services during working hours.

3. Investigate Existing Behavior

Ask potential customers what they currently do, what it costs, and where the difficulty occurs. Avoid relying only on “Would you use this?” Record observations separately from your interpretations. A small convenience sample cannot establish demand across an entire market.

4. Build a Transparent Financial Model

Show pricing, expected sales, variable costs, fixed costs, and startup expenses. Identify the source or rationale for each assumption. Test what happens if sales are lower or costs are higher than expected.

5. Build the Pitch Around Evidence

Explain the problem, customer, solution, alternatives, business model, evidence, and next steps. Follow the required slide and time limits. Make clear what is validated and what remains uncertain.

6. Rehearse the Difficult Questions

Ask a peer or faculty member to challenge your weakest assumptions. Practice answering questions such as:

Why would customers switch?

How will you reach them?

What happens if demand is half your forecast?

Your Submission Checklist

Before submitting, confirm that:

Your team meets the eligibility rules.

Every required document is included in the correct format.

Your customer segment and problem are specific.

Research sources are traceable and assumptions are labeled.

The financial model and pitch use consistent figures.

You explain competitors and existing alternatives.

Team responsibilities and next steps are clear.

Your presentation fits the time limit.

You understand the disclosure and prize terms.

You have saved the final files and submission confirmation.

Watch for three avoidable mistakes: treating a large industry estimate as your reachable market, counting interested interviewees as paying customers, and spending more time polishing slides than testing assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need a Registered Company to Enter?

It depends on the competition. Some accept ideas; others require an existing venture or a particular development stage. Check eligibility before registering or preparing an entry.

Can I Participate Without My Own Startup Idea?

You may be able to join a team and contribute research, finance, operations, or presentation skills. Confirm the event’s team rules and agree on responsibilities before starting.

How Long Should I Allow for Preparation?

Work backward from the deadline. Allow time for research, financial modeling, revisions, and rehearsal. The schedule will depend on the required deliverables and how much evidence your team already has.

Does Winning Mean the Business Is Viable?

No. An award reflects performance against an event’s criteria. The venture still needs to demonstrate customer demand, workable economics, and reliable execution outside the competition.

Take Your Next Step

Choose one competition and read its rulebook.
