They spent six minutes on a question that was never going to yield, then rushed five easy ones at the end. CAT time management is the skill of avoiding that, and it can be trained.

Your CAT attempt strategy has to work inside a strict format, and that format is unforgiving. CAT gives 120 minutes in total, with a hard 40 minutes per section and no moving between sections. Time you do not use in VARC does not help you in DILR. Marking is +3 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong MCQ, with no negative marking on TITA questions. In CAT 2025 the paper had 68 questions split as VARC 24, DILR 22 and QA 22, so your choices on which questions to take matter more than the total count. Confirm the 2026 pattern on the official website before the exam.

Check the official CAT 2026 pattern, dates and updates (registration closed 22 September 2026; exam on 29 November 2026): https://iimcat.ac.in

The four-block rule for every section

If you want one framework before the detailed plans, this is it. Whatever CAT time management tips you collect from coaching videos, they mostly reduce to these four blocks.

Scan (first 2 to 5 minutes): read through the section and mark each question or set as easy, moderate or skip. Do not solve yet.

First pass: take the easy ones in order. Bank marks quickly and calmly.

Second pass: return to the moderate ones. Set a limit per question and stick to it.

Check (last 3 to 5 minutes): re-read answers you were unsure of and make sure every TITA has an entry.

These CAT time management tips are simple enough to practise from tomorrow, and they also answer how to attempt CAT paper sections in a calm, repeatable order. The exact minutes below are a starting structure. Adjust them to the section and to your own mock results.

Minute-by-minute: VARC

In CAT 2025, reading comprehension and verbal ability questions appeared mixed through the section rather than grouped, so a quick scan matters even more.

Minutes

What to do

0 to 3

Scan all questions and passages. Leave a single question if two options still look right after about a minute and a half. Return only in the second pass.

Minute-by-minute: DILR

DILR punishes sunk-cost thinking more than any other section. A set that does not open up in a few minutes rarely improves with more time. For the full method, see the DILR set selection approach of scanning, ranking and skipping.

Minutes

What to do

0 to 5

Scan every set. Mark it and move on. Return to it only if time remains after your other sets.

Minute-by-minute: QA

QA rewards a clean first pass. Because QA includes TITA questions with no penalty, a blank is a wasted chance.

Minutes

What to do

0 to 3

Scan all questions. Mark easy, moderate, skip.

3 to 22

First pass on easy questions. Aim for speed with care.

22 to 35

Second pass on moderate questions, with a limit of about two and a half minutes each.

35 to 40

Return to the toughest TITAs, enter your best estimate, and check calculations on risky answers.

When to skip: leave a question if you cannot see the first step within about 30 seconds, or if it passes the two-and-a-half-minute limit. Mark it and move on. A skipped TITA still gets your best estimate in the last block.

These time blocks are suggestions to test in your mocks, not rules to follow blindly. Change them if your mock review tells you different.

CAT time management tips in action: a worked DILR example

This is a hypothetical DILR mock, not real candidate data. It shows how to attempt CAT paper sections against the plan above, and what the skip rule does to the outcome.

0 to 5 minutes: the student scans four sets and ranks them. Set B is easy, Sets A and D are moderate, and Set C is tough.

5 to 16 minutes: Set B is solved fully, with all four questions answered by minute 15. This is on plan.

16 to 27 minutes: the student starts Set D but finds no entry point by minute 20. Following the skip rule, the student marks it and moves to Set A, where three questions are answered by minute 27.

27 to 36 minutes: the fourth Set A question is done by minute 30. The student then returns to Set D and, with a fresh look at the table layout, answers two of its questions by minute 36.

36 to 40 minutes: the student checks every TITA entry and corrects one slip. Set C is left untouched.

The result is ten attempts from three sets. Had the student stayed on Set D past minute 20, those minutes would not have been available for Set A. Of all CAT time management tips, the skip rule is the one that turns a stuck set into a usable one. The numbers here are a teaching illustration, so test the same structure against your own mocks.

Attempts vs accuracy: why more is not always better

A sound CAT attempt strategy starts with this arithmetic. Under +3 for a right answer and -1 for a wrong MCQ, a wrong answer cancels a third of a right one. The table below uses simple, illustrative numbers for MCQ-only attempts, not real candidate data.

Attempts

Correct

Wrong

Net score

10

10

0

30

12

11

1

32

15

12

3

33

18

12

6

30

Going from 12 attempts to 15 helped. Going on to 18 added six attempts and lost three marks, because the extra answers were mostly wrong. The point is to find your own turning point, where more attempts stop paying. Your mock history shows it.

Guessing follows the same logic. On a four-option MCQ, a pure guess has an expected value of zero: a one-in-four chance of +3 and a three-in-four chance of -1. If you can rule out one option, the odds improve, and a guess is worth taking. TITA has no penalty, so always enter something.

Start practising now

With CAT 2026 approaching, start practising time management under the 40-minute limit for each section now. Use timed mock tests to improve question selection, avoid spending too long on difficult questions, and build the speed and accuracy needed before exam day.

After each mock, refine your CAT attempt strategy by noting where the clock went: slow starts, one long dwell, or a rushed finish. Fix the most common pattern first. Time left in one section does not carry over to the next.

2. How should I attempt the CAT paper in each section?
Spend the first few minutes scanning, answer the easiest questions first, make a second pass on the moderate ones and keep the last few minutes for checking. The minute-by-minute plan above shows one way to split the 40 minutes.

3. Should I guess in CAT?
On a four-option MCQ marked +3 and -1, a pure guess has an expected value of zero, so it does not help or hurt on average. If you can rule out one option, the odds move in your favour. TITA questions carry no negative marking, so always enter an answer.

4. How many questions should I attempt in each section?
There is no universal number. It depends on your accuracy and the paper. Use your mock history: find the number of attempts at which your score stops rising and starts falling because of wrong answers.

5. Is speed or accuracy more important in CAT?
Both matter, but because a wrong MCQ costs 1 mark and a right one earns 3, accuracy falls behind quickly if you rush. A moderate number of attempts with high accuracy usually beats a high number of attempts with many errors.

6. How can I improve CAT time management before the exam?
Practise full sections under a 40-minute timer, review where each minute went and fix the pattern you see most often, whether it is slow starts, long dwelling on one question or rushed endings.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "Organization",
      "@id":
