A CAT score that falls short of your target puts a question in every WhatsApp group: should I take a drop for CAT, or join a B-school this year? Here is an honest answer, including the parts where the data simply is not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A data-backed answer begins with a limit. The CAT convenor does not publish how many candidates improve on a repeat CAT attempt, and we found no reliable public dataset on CAT second attempt success. CAT also has no official score-to-percentile table, and every IIM sets its own cut-offs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So before you decide on a drop year for CAT, note that when a coaching ad says most repeaters jump 10 or 15 percentile points, ask for the source. Without one, treat it as marketing. What you can do is use the facts that are published, then add your own numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What the published numbers do show is how crowded the pool is. CAT 2025 had about 2.95 lakh registrations and about 2.58 lakh test-takers, an attendance of about 86 percent (Careers360), against roughly 7,400 seats across the IIMs (Careers360 estimate from 2024-26 data), or about 35 test-takers per seat. A repeat attempt competes in that same pool, alongside every first-timer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IIMs also score academics, work experience and diversity, and each does it differently. IIM Ahmedabad’s published criteria for PGP 2027-29 ask for 95 overall and 85 in each section for General and EWS candidates. That sectional floor matters as much as the overall number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Freshers do get in, which matters if you are weighing a drop year for CAT without a job. Careers360 reported that 29 percent of IIM Ahmedabad’s 2024-26 batch were freshers. iQuanta puts the share at roughly 20 to 29 percent across IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta, with no year given. What we can say is that interviewers care about how you used the time. A clear answer such as ‘I identified that my DILR was the problem, worked on it, and here is my mock trend’ reads far better than a vague one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A drop year has a price beyond coaching fees. It costs you in two separate ways: the earnings you give up this year, and a one-year delay to your whole career. The table keeps the two apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Illustrative arithmetic. J and C are assumed figures for the example; the S range is sourced below.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Example in rupees: assume J is \u20b96 lakh and C is \u20b91 lakh. For S, use FIIB’s published placement figures: a median package of \u20b99.5 lakh, an average of \u20b914 lakh for the top 20% of the batch, and a highest accepted package of \u20b924 lakh, with a 95% placement rate. At S = \u20b99.5 lakh, the drop year costs about \u20b96 + \u20b99.5 + \u20b91 = \u20b916.5 lakh. At S = \u20b914 lakh, it costs about \u20b921 lakh. Even at the highest package of \u20b924 lakh, it costs about \u20b931 lakh. Then ask what a successful repeat CAT attempt must add over a lifetime to pay that back, and compare it with F for the college you could join today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Joining a good programme this year is a real option, not a defeat. A strong PGDM or MBA gives you a year of learning, internships and placements while your peers are still preparing. Check the curriculum, the faculty and the placement report on the college’s official page, not a ranking list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FIIB’s PGDM accepts CAT scores with a 60 percentile requirement in a recognised exam, along with a bachelor’s degree with at least 50 percent.
