Dr. Samiksha welcomed all the four renowned HR leaders who participated in the roundtable and requested them to enlighten FIIB Racers with the current New Normal recruiting scenario and how a graduating student can differentiate and stand out from other potential job seekers in the eyes and minds of the recruiters in such times.

Touching on a variety of topics, the one & half hour discussion revolved around identifying what skills MBA graduates must possess, how a candidate can stand out from a pile of resumes, and understanding the most important element in getting hired - what a recruiter looks for while interviewing a management graduate.

Main Key Takeaways from the HR Roundtable discussion:

  • While recruiters have always given precedence to practicality and technical expertise over academic understanding, the pandemic has made this mindset and the assessment of the value that a management graduate can add even more upfront. “Every single MBA graduate should say ‘Hire me, I can reduce your company cost!rather than pitching ‘Hire me, I would be an added asset to the organization.’ while appearing in a job interview,” said Mr. Ajay Sharma, Head HR, Lixil Group.

  • MBA students must have a clear and crisp understanding of their domain and destination in terms of the function and industry they want to work in. “I personally take keen note of these three aspects while interviewing any grad: a) Customer Advocacy/ Orientation; b) Technology Adeptness & Expertise; c) Flexibility and Communication,” said Ms. Neha Sehgal, Head HR, SRF Ltd.
  • Inquisitiveness as a skill is what matters the most. No matter whether a candidate comes with experience or is a complete fresher; what matters the most is the approach of that student while appearing in the interview process. “Have you tried to really get into the shoes of an employee rather than restricting yourself to just being an intern for the two months of your corporate internship, is what decodes any students’ resume to me,” said Ms. Suchita Dantre, Lead HR- COE, HT Media.
  • Innovative mindset and initiative-taking approach is what make any hiree stand out, before or after onboarding. There are times when recruiters think that they found the perfect match in terms of skills and domain expertise, but the real assessment happens after a few months when the manager or team members review and find out whether the new hiree brought any new ideas or innovation to the discussion table. “As a professional, one must remain true to their job and creativity, and that’s when the speckle of magic happens,” said Ms. Nupur Jain Karthik, TA Lead, S&P Global.
The panel discussion concluded with a Q&A round where students raised their queries and concerns and in return got some more valuable advice and suggestions that will help them develop their skills and personalities to match up with the desired efficiencies of a more virtually operating corporate world.
