We earned our place. What responsibility comes with it?
Over the past decade, journal rankings have become powerful signals of scholarly quality, career progression, and institutional prestige. Achieving recognition within these systems is a milestone worth acknowledging.
Yet as journals mature and gain standing, a deeper question emerges:
What Should High-Quality Research
Ultimately Serve?
Responsible Editorship Conference 2026 is a reflective, forward-looking conference that examines the responsibilities accompanying scholarly recognition. Rather than debating rankings themselves, the conference focuses on:
- the signals journals send
- the norms they reinforce
- the research behaviours they privilege
- and the human consequences for scholars navigating these systems
For the first time in India, editors, scholars, and institutional leaders will come together to examine what responsible editorial leadership demands in a ranking-driven academic ecosystem.
Why Responsible Editorship Matters Now
India's management research ecosystem has matured rapidly over the past decade.
- Journals have gained international visibility.
- Doctoral programmes have expanded.
- Institutions have invested heavily in research cultures.
Yet an important conversation remains largely missing.
As journals gain standing, they also gain influence — shaping what research gets pursued, what methodologies are considered legitimate, and what career paths scholars feel able to follow.
Responsible Editorship Conference 2026 invites editors, scholars, and institutional leaders to reflect on that influence — and the responsibilities that come with it.
This is not a celebration of rankings.
It is a conversation about what they demand from the people who shape them.

Panel Discussion Themes
Panel 1
How Can Journals Shape Research Norms?
Governance, review practices, and editorial courage
Journals play a powerful—often underestimated—role in shaping academic behaviour. Beyond publishing outcomes, they influence the questions scholars pursue, the methods that feel legitimate, and the intellectual risks researchers are willing to take.
This panel examines how editorial policies, review practices, and signalling mechanisms shape research culture and scholarly legitimacy. It also explores where editors still have the discretion to exercise judgement, courage, and experimentation.
Key questions
- What research behaviours do current editorial and review practices unintentionally reinforce?
- Where do editors retain meaningful discretion within ranking-driven systems?
- How do journals signal what "counts" as contribution?
Panel 2
Early Career Scholars and the Ranking Trap
Consequences, unintended effects, and future research pipelines
For early career scholars, journal rankings are not abstract indicators—they are lived realities. Publication expectations shape doctoral training, methodological choices, collaboration patterns, and even the research questions scholars feel able to pursue.
This panel brings the human consequences of ranking-driven systems into focus, examining how editorial signals and institutional expectations influence curiosity, intellectual risk-taking, and long-term scholarly development.
Key questions
- How do ranking pressures shape early career research decisions?
- What kinds of research never begin because they feel too uncertain or unconventional?
- What responsibilities do journals and institutions have toward sustaining diverse research pipelines?
