CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026, which puts the last 30 days at roughly 29 October onward. At this point most aspirants have a stack of mocks and a folder of CAT previous year question papers they have not touched. The question is how to turn that folder into score. Here is a plan, with the limits of the data stated.
What CAT previous year question papers can and cannot do
CAT previous year question papers show you the real exam’s style: the length of Reading Comprehension passages, the shape of DILR sets, and the way Quant questions are framed. They do not predict questions. We found no reliable evidence that specific CAT questions repeat from year to year, so aim to learn patterns, not memorise questions.
They also have a quirk that the title of this post hides. Papers from 2017 to 2025 are not one format. Treat them in two groups, as the table below shows.
CAT papers 2017 to 2025: pattern, difficulty and trends
| Year | Questions (VARC / DILR / QA) and time | Reported difficulty | Trend notes |
| 2017 | 100 (34 / 32 / 34), 180 min, 60 min per section | Moderate to difficult (sources conflict) | QA reported tough; VARC easier |
| 2018 | 100 (34 / 32 / 34), 180 min, 60 min per section | Moderate to difficult | Logical reasoning reported toughest |
| 2019 | 100 (34 / 32 / 34), 180 min, 60 min per section | Easy to moderate | Two of three RC passages reported easy |
| 2020 | 76 (26 / 24 / 26), 120 min, 40 min per section | Moderate to difficult | Logical reasoning reported toughest |
| 2021 | 66 (24 / 20 / 22), 120 min, 40 min per section | Moderate to difficult | DILR the hardest section |
| 2022 | 66 (24 / 20 / 22), 120 min, 40 min per section | Moderate to difficult | DILR reported toughest |
| 2023 | 66 (24 / 20 / 22), 120 min, 40 min per section | Difficult (sources disagree on DILR) | RC 16 of 24 VARC questions; arithmetic 8 to 9 of 22 in QA (one source) |
| 2024 | 68 (24 / 22 / 22), 120 min, 40 min per section | Moderate | Longer RC passages, no parajumbles (as reported) |
| 2025 | 68 (24 / 22 / 22), 120 min, 40 min per section | Slot 3 toughest overall | QA hardest in slot 3; sources differ on DILR |
Sources: question counts from iQuanta and Hitbullseye (CAT 2021), cross-checked with Careers360; difficulty and trend notes from Careers360’s CAT past-years analysis and CAT 2025 exam analysis. Difficulty is a coaching-site judgement, not an official rating.
Two things follow. First, the 2017 to 2019 papers had far more questions and more time per question, so they are good for section practice but poor for rehearsing CAT 2026 timing. Second, the 2021 to 2025 papers share the same broad format as the exam you will sit, so they are the ones to use as full simulations.
Where to find CAT previous year papers with solutions
The CAT website is the official source, but our research found that past papers there are tied to a candidate login for the respective cycle and are not kept as a public archive. Check iimcat.ac.in for what is available to you.

Most aspirants end up using third-party archives of recalled papers, including a CAT previous year paper with solutions from coaching sites. These are not official papers, and solutions can differ between sources. Whichever CAT previous year paper with solutions you use, solve each question yourself first, compare at least two explanations, and note where they disagree. We do not host or reproduce any paper here.
A 30-day plan for CAT previous year question papers
This is a suggested structure, not a proven ratio. Adjust it to your weaker sections and your mock scores.
Days 1 to 7: diagnose
- Take one recent paper, such as the CAT 2025 question paper, as a full timed test: 120 minutes, 40 per section.
- Build an error log for every wrong or skipped question (see below).
- Pick your two weakest topics per section from the log.
Days 8 to 20: section drills
- Do one timed section from a CAT 2021 to 2025 paper most days, rotating VARC, DILR and Quant.
- Use 2017 to 2019 papers for untimed or lightly timed topic practice in your weak areas.
- Add a full mock every three to four days and review it the next morning.
Days 21 to 27: full-length simulations
- Alternate a full mock with a full recent CAT PYQ paper at the exam’s slot time.
- Practise your question-selection rule: which DILR sets you skip, and when you leave a Quant question.
Days 28 to 30: taper
- No new papers. Re-read the error log, revise formulas and keep a normal sleep schedule.
Use CAT previous year papers from 2017 to 2025 strategically during the final 30 days to find weak areas, lift accuracy and be ready on test day.
How to analyse a CAT PYQ: the error log
CAT previous year question papers only help if you learn from them. After each attempt, record every wrong or skipped question with one of four causes:
- Concept gap: you did not know the method. Fix it with a short topic review.
- Calculation slip: you knew the method and made an arithmetic error. Slow down on those steps.
- Selection error: you spent time on a poor question and missed a better one. Fix your skip rule.
- Time sink: you got it right but took too long. Practice a faster route.
After a week, count the causes. If most errors are selection errors, more topic study will not help; practice choosing questions. This is the part of PYQ practice that improves speed and accuracy, and it is the part most aspirants skip.
CAT PYQ practice for VARC, DILR and Quant
VARC: Reading Comprehension is the largest share of the section. In CAT 2023 one source counts 16 of 24 questions as RC. Do at least two RC passages from recent papers daily, and review why the wrong options were wrong.
DILR: the most variable section. Reported difficulty has swung between years, with DILR called the hardest in 2021 and 2022. practice spotting an easy set in five minutes, then commit. Skipping a bad set is a skill.
Quant: arithmetic and algebra take the largest share in the 2023 breakdown we found. Revisit those first, and keep a short list of formulas you still misapply.
PYQs and mocks: how they fit together
CAT PYQ practice teaches you the real exam’s style, and mocks teach you timing and nerves. In the last 30 days, use PYQs more for section practice early and mocks more for full-length rehearsal later. Neither replaces the other. If you are also weighing XAT and CMAT, keep those dates in view too.

FAQs
Where can I find CAT previous year question papers?
The only official source is the CAT website, iimcat.ac.in, and our research found that official papers there are reachable through a candidate login for those who appeared in that cycle, not as a public archive. Most aspirants use third-party archives of recalled papers with solutions. Treat those as practice material, not official papers, and check the solutions yourself.
Should I do CAT previous year papers or mocks in the last 30 days?
Do both, in different roles. Use CAT PYQ practice to learn the real exam’s style, section by section, and use mocks to rehearse timing and strategy. A common split is PYQ sections early in the month and full mocks later, with every attempt reviewed. This is a suggested structure, not a proven ratio.
Are CAT papers before 2020 useful for CAT 2026?
Yes for sections, with a caution. The 2017 to 2019 papers had 100 questions in 180 minutes, while recent papers have 66 to 68 questions in 120 minutes. Use the older papers to practice individual sections and question types, not as a timing simulation of CAT 2026.
Is there a CAT previous year paper with solutions that I can trust?
No single free source is official. Coaching sites publish solutions of recalled papers, and they sometimes differ. Solve the question yourself first, compare with at least two explanations, and note any disagreement before you accept an answer.
How do I use the CAT 2025 question paper?
Treat it as the closest guide to CAT 2026. CAT 2025 had 68 questions: 24 in VARC and 22 each in DILR and Quant, with a 40-minute limit per section. Use it as a timed full-length test, then review every wrong or skipped question. Confirm the CAT 2026 pattern on iimcat.ac.in.
Do the same questions repeat in CAT?
We found no reliable evidence that specific questions repeat. What recurs is topic mix and style: Reading Comprehension takes the largest share of VARC, and arithmetic and algebra take the largest share of Quant. practice patterns, not memorised questions.
When is CAT 2026, and has registration closed?
CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026. Registration closed on 22 September 2026. Check iimcat.ac.in for the admit card and any official notice.
