A strong CAT percentile gets you noticed. It does not, on its own, get you the seat. Once the results are out, the real work of how B-schools select students begins, and most of it has nothing to do with your percentile.
If you are a high scorer with an average academic record, a fresher worried about work experience, or a repeat taker wondering what else to fix, this guide shows what the MBA selection criteria actually look like. It uses reported weights for two IIMs and for FIIB, and it is honest about what is not public.
CAT 2026 registration closed on September 22. Dates and notices are on the official CAT site: iimcat.ac.in.
How B-schools select students: three stages
Most institutes follow the same arc. Stage one is shortlisting, where your CAT score and profile decide whether you get a call. Stage two is the written ability test and the personal interview. Stage three is a final composite that adds everything up.
The weights shift between stages, which is why a single number for CAT score weightage is misleading. A score that dominates shortlisting can count for far less in the final composite.
The IIM formula: CAT first, interview last
Reported 2026-28 weights show the pattern. At IIM Ahmedabad, shortlisting combines 65% CAT percentile with 35% application rating, according to Careers360. The final composite then splits as personal interview 50%, CAT 25%, written ability test 10% and application rating 15%.
IIM Bangalore’s reported final composite is CAT 25%, personal interview 40%, written ability test 10%, academics 15% and work experience 10%. Cracku and Careers360 agree on both institutes. Other IIMs use different splits, and published sources conflict on them, so read each institute’s own admission policy.
The lesson is simple. CAT gets you through the door. After that, the interview carries the most weight at both institutes, more than CAT itself.
CAT score weightage versus academics: do low marks kill your chances?
No, but they cost points. IIMs score your Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks, and a weak record lowers your composite. A strong CAT score and a good interview can recover part of that gap, but the points are real.
What you cannot change is your marks. What you can change is everything around them: your section-wise CAT performance, your written ability test, and how well you explain your profile. Some institutes also set minimum academic or sectional cut-offs, so a low percentile in one section can matter.
Work experience: how many points do freshers lose?
Less than most people fear. IIM Ahmedabad’s reported formula gives zero points below 12 months, then 0.20 times (months minus 11), capped at 5 points at 36 months. IIM Bangalore’s pre-interview scale runs up to 10 points, reaching the maximum at 36 months, per Careers360.
Freshers start a few points behind, and those points can be won back elsewhere. Internships generally do not count toward the formula, so do not rely on them to close the gap.
Academic diversity and gender diversity
Many IIMs add points for women candidates and for academic diversity, which favors non-engineering applicants. The size of these points varies by institute and cycle, and not every institute gives both. Careers360 reports a 5-point gender diversity weight at IIM Bangalore in the pre-interview stage.
Treat diversity as a small boost, not a strategy. You cannot change your background, and nobody should pick a degree around it.
Personal interview weightage: where the seat is decided
The interview is the largest single block in the reported formulas: 50% at IIM Ahmedabad and 40% at IIM Bangalore. It also carries real weight at private institutes. Prepare a clear story: why management, why now, what your academics and work say about you, and what you want from the program.
The written ability test sits beside it at 10%. It is the cheapest marks to protect, since you can practice it alone.
Profile-based MBA admission at private B-schools
Private institutes usually run a holistic model, often called profile-based MBA admission. Instead of one formula, their MBA selection criteria weigh entrance score, academics, work experience, writing and interview together. Collegedunia reports CAT 30% and personal interview 50% at IMI New Delhi, and CAT 35% with interview 40% at IMT Ghaziabad, for the CAT 2025 cycle.
How FIIB Evaluates Applicants
FIIB evaluates applicants on more than the entrance score. Shortlisting starts with the application and an accepted entrance exam score, and shortlisted candidates move through further assessment stages, including a personal interview, as set out on the FIIB PGDM admission page.

A worked example: why the interview swing beats the CAT swing
Take the reported IIM Ahmedabad final composite, where the interview is worth 50 points and CAT 25. This is an illustration, not a prediction. Two candidates sit at the same stage. One scores 70% of the available interview marks and the other 90%. That 20 percentage-point gap is worth 10 points on the composite. If the same two candidates differed by 20 percentage points on their CAT contribution, the gap would be 5 points.
The same swing in the interview moves your final score twice as far as the same swing in CAT. That is why serious candidates treat interview preparation as seriously as mock tests, once their call is in hand.
Fixing common profile gaps
● High CAT, average academics: lean on the parts you control. Prepare a specific, honest answer about your marks, and show growth through projects, certifications or results since.
● Fresher with no work experience: work-ex points are capped and small. Use internships, research or leadership to build interview material, even if they earn no formula points.
● Non-engineering background: academic diversity can help at some institutes, so check each policy. Be ready to explain why management suits your background.
● Repeat CAT taker: expect the interview to probe the gap year or years. Have a clear account of what you learned and what changed.
● Low marks in Class 10 or 12: you cannot change them, so do not spend interview time apologizing. State the context briefly and move to your strengths.
How to read an admission policy
Look for four things: the stages, the weight of each criterion in each stage, any minimum cut-offs, and the cycle the policy applies to. A policy for one batch may not hold for the next. Save the policy page for every institute on your list, and compare it with what your coaching institute or a blog says.
What to do before CAT 2026 results
Understand B-school shortlisting criteria before CAT 2026 results and application deadlines, so you can assess your admission chances, prepare for personal interviews, and strengthen your profile for the 2027 PGDM intake.
Start with three steps. Pull each target institute’s latest admission policy and note its stage-wise weights. Score yourself honestly on academics and work experience. Then spend your time where the marks are largest: the interview and the written test.

FAQs
How do B-schools select students beyond the CAT score?
Most work in stages. CAT score and profile decide who gets shortlisted. A written ability test and personal interview follow. The final selection combines CAT, academics, work experience, diversity points and interview performance. The exact weights differ by institute and change by year.
How much is CAT score weightage in final selection?
For the 2026-28 batch, third-party reports put CAT at 25% of the final composite at both IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore. CAT counts for much more at the shortlisting stage (65% at IIMA and 55% at IIMB, per Careers360). Check each institute’s admission policy for the current numbers.
Can low 10th, 12th or graduation marks hurt me despite a high CAT percentile?
They cost points, not automatically your call. IIMA and IIMB score academics, so low marks reduce your composite, and a strong CAT score can offset part of that. Some institutes also set academic cut-offs, so read each policy before you assume.
Does work experience matter for freshers?
Freshers lose some points but not their chance. At IIMA, work experience scores zero below 12 months and rises to a cap of 5 points at 36 months. IIMB’s pre-interview scale tops out at 10 points. Freshers can recover ground through CAT score, writing and interview.
How much does the personal interview weigh?
In reported 2026-28 formulas, the personal interview carries 50% at IIM Ahmedabad and 40% at IIM Bangalore. For FIIB, a 2021 Careers360 report put it at 25%, alongside written and speaking tests. Confirm FIIB’s current weights with its admissions team.
What is profile-based MBA admission?
It means no single score decides. The institute weighs your entrance exam score together with academics, work experience, writing ability and interview. Profile-based MBA admission rewards a clear story and strong interview performance, not just a high percentile.
How does FIIB select students?
FIIB’s reported process combines entrance exam score, written and speaking tests, and a personal interview, with academics and work experience also scored. The last weights I could find were reported in 2021, so check fiib.edu.in for the current process.
